Only products that pass rigorous testing for harmful substances earn these seals — though they don’t necessarily speak to where the raw materials came from, so it’s worth checking directly with the manufacturer if that matters to you.
1. Blue Angel
Products bearing the Blue Angel seal are sustainable from production through to disposal. The release of harmful substances is limited, and the wood used comes largely from sustainably managed forests.
2. Eco-Institut Label
Earning the Eco-Institut label requires emissions and toxicity testing that goes well beyond legal requirements, covering the entire process from raw material extraction through manufacturing, processing, and use, all the way to disposal or recyclability. You’ll find it on furniture and mattresses, among other products.
3. FSC Certification
The Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) seal indicates that the wood used comes from forests managed responsibly, both environmentally and socially. It’s recognized internationally.
4. PEFC Certification
This seal for wood and paper products guarantees that the wood comes from sustainably managed forests. It relies on self-reporting, however, which has made it a frequent target of criticism.
5. Golden M
Created specifically for furniture, this seal certifies that a piece poses no health risks. Certification also involves testing for durability and stability — both essential markers of a genuinely sustainable product.
Invest Sustainably
Sustainable furniture is the better choice, for your health and for the planet. Don’t be put off by prices that run a little higher than the big-box furniture chains — remember that quality pieces last longer, often staying in your living room, bedroom, or study for years or even decades.
