For decades, the world-famous filmmaker George Lucas has been producing exceptional wines in his native California. Since 2017, Château Margüi in Provence has also belonged to his Skywalker Vineyards — the source of the Bastide de Margüi rosé, an Oscar-worthy organic rosé in a class of its own.

By Sascha Melein

The idyllic landscape that is home to the Provençal estate Château Margüi has been under cultivation for some 2,600 years. Numerous historical finds across the grounds bear witness to the estate’s long history — wheat, olives, almonds, apricots, and melons were grown here long before wine ever was. In 2017, this storied terroir became part of director George Lucas’s Skywalker Vineyards. Since then, something remarkable has been unfolding here, yielding wines worthy of a standing ovation.

Skywalker Vineyards: Filmreife Bio-Weine von George Lucas

Meticulous craftsmanship, a deep connection to local winemaking tradition, and a profound love of nature define George Lucas’s approach to production. That’s why he favors regionally native grape varieties and small, carefully divided vineyard plots, allowing for precise care of every single vine and a more nuanced expression of the terroir. Since his involvement with Château Margüi began, every vineyard has been certified organic, safeguarding an ecosystem — and its precious biodiversity — that took centuries to form.

The native varieties Syrah, Grenache, Cinsault, Rolle, and Cabernet Sauvignon thrive across the estate’s 42 hectares of vines, planted largely in clay-limestone soil. The grapes’ slow, steady ripening gives the wines their full-bodied character, paired with remarkable aromatic complexity and exceptional harmony.

Bastide de Margüi — An Organic Rosé in a Class of Its Own

The Bastide de Margüi rosé is quintessential Provence. A beguiling bouquet unfolds in countless shades of rose, raspberry, and grenadine, underscored by pink grapefruit and lemon balm. The palate opens creamy and soft, then reveals the same striking range of fruit — generous, perfectly balanced, now joined by peach melba and vanilla-strawberry notes. Sweetly smooth yet full of tension, it holds its own from first sip to last, a rosé entirely in a league of its own. This is a wine made for the table — pair it with a monkfish and mango tartare or a lobster tagine.

Serving suggestion: Chilled, at 9–12°C. Blend: 50% Grenache, 30% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Syrah

The bastide (French for “country house”) was built in 1784 in classic Provençal style. Driven by the ambition to craft precise, unmistakable wines, this cuvée draws exclusively on grapes from selected plots, aged in tulip-shaped amphorae and oak barrels. Temperature, concentration, and color are calibrated to each vintage to ensure flawless balance and aromatic complexity. The product of years of research and innovation, this signature wine reveals the full richness and splendor of the Château Margüi terroir.

The Bastide de Margüi rosé is available through Mövenpick Wein for €36.00.
