Die Stadtgärtner (“The City Gardeners”) are on a mission: a greener world, one seed bomb at a time. The three men behind it, Derk, Jan and Torge, are true nature lovers at heart. Two of them grew up on a farm in Nordhorn that today serves as the production site for their seed bombs — the very product that started it all.
Their studies scattered them across different cities, and it was somewhere among the grey, unyielding streets that the idea first took root: fight back against urban grey with a bit of green. The first seed balls were rolled out on a Hamburg balcony in 2011, and word spread fast among friends — the idea landed like, well, a bomb.
From small beginnings to something they’re proud of
Torge remembers it well: “In the beginning, we never planned to turn this into a business. But over time we kept getting more and more requests, so we decided to open our first Dawanda shop.” What began as a fun side project and a little extra pocket money has grown into an ambitious young company with a serious focus on quality, design and what its customers actually want.
Die Stadtgärtner’s products are now stocked in more than 500 shops. The range spans seed bombs, seeds, growing greeting cards and flower pots, but the careful handwork on the family farm — and the love of nature behind it — has never changed. Family members once pitched in themselves; today, Die Stadtgärtner also gets support from the local disability services organization.

The original three have since been joined by more Stadtgärtner, now spread across Nordhorn and Lübeck, with new ideas sprouting daily. The future looks green to them, and they’re taking on the everyday grey with their own peaceful battle cry: toss, wait, and enjoy!
