The Trouble With Plastic
Food should taste good to kids and support their healthy development — but quality ingredients alone aren’t enough. Parents should think carefully about the tableware their children eat from too, and yet most everyday dishware is still made from cheap, synthetic plastic. Brightly printed plastic plates and bowls remain popular with many parents for good reason: they’re light and practically unbreakable, which matters to anyone who’s eaten with a toddler and watched bowls tip over or cups hit the floor on a regular basis.
Unfortunately, these plastics often carry hazardous chemicals — synthetic plasticizers (phthalates), flame retardants, or bisphenol A (BPA) — that can affect a child’s health and development. Melamine resin, a popular tableware material, begins releasing its component compounds, including skin-irritating formaldehyde, at temperatures above 70°C. These substances can then enter the body unnoticed through food, potentially contributing to allergies, fertility issues, and even cancer. On top of that, plastics are derived from petroleum, a fossil resource whose extraction, processing, and disposal all take a toll on the environment.
Plastic-Free Alternatives
Fortunately, as more parents look for healthier, more environmentally sound alternatives, the market has responded with an appealing range of options. Here’s a look at the materials and makers behind today’s best children’s tableware.
Plates, Bowls & Cups
For meals at home, slightly heavier porcelain tableware works beautifully — it’s microwave-safe and dishwasher-safe too.
